Soda Giants Turn to Developing World to Replace Lost US Sales, Report Finds

As their sales ebb in the United States, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo have borrowed tactics from Big Tobacco by looking to developing nations for new customers, according to a report released today by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI).
The trend is driving up global rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, tooth decay, which are overwhelming health systems in nations with rapid population growth, according to the report, “Carbonating the World.”

Consumer Group Sues DOT For Failure To Create Searchable Database Of Safety Defects

More than three years ago, Congress instructed the Department of Transportation to create a publicly accessible, and easily searchable, website featuring communications between regulators, automakers, dealers, and consumers about safety defects. One safety group says this hasn’t happened, and is suing DOT Secretary Anthony Foxx in an effort to make this database a reality.

Scammy Sellers Of AF Plus, Final Trim Weight-Loss Pills Made Millions From Bogus “Risk-Free” Trials

You may have heard radio ads for weight loss supplements named AF Plus and Final Trim, promising “24 hours of fat burning power” and “maximum weight loss,” along with supposed real-world testimonials about how well these pills worked — and how you can try them now through a “risk-free” trial. Problem is, those people in the ads claiming they lost all that weight are just as fictitious as the free trial.

And yet, according to the Federal Trade Commission and Maine Attorney General Janet Mills, the company behind the ads and these supplements managed to make more than $16 million in just a few years from this scam.

Films with smoking scenes should be rated “R” to protect children from tobacco addiction

New WHO report shows that tobacco appeared in 44% of all films in Hollywood in 2014. The World Health Organization is calling on governments to assign “R” ratings to movies that portray tobacco use, to reduce the chances of children and adolescents from starting to smoke cigarettes and use other forms of tobacco.

Movies showing tobacco use have enticed millions of young people worldwide to start smoking, according to the new WHO Smoke-Free Movies Report – From evidence to action, the third edition since its launch in 2009.

Breastfeeding could prevent 800,000 child deaths, Lancet says

If almost every mother breastfed her children it could prevent more than 800,000 child deaths a year, yet governments are failing to promote and support breastfeeding, with rates remaining far below international targets, new research has found.

Poor government policies, lack of community support and an aggressive formula milk industry mean breastfeeding is not as widespread as it could be, according to a two-part Lancet breastfeeding series published on Thursday.
