Local hikers opposed to ad signs on nature trails
By NICK WILLIAMS
Local trail enthusiasts say legislation that would allow the selling of naming rights and commercial advertising on state-owned greenways and trails would destroy its very purpose.
Senate Bill 268, sponsored by Sen. Stephen Wise, R-Jacksonville, would give the Florida Department of Environmental Protection the authority to sell sponsorship agreements to nonprofit and private businesses. The signs or displays would be limited to trailheads, trail intersections, directional or distance markers, interpretive exhibits and parking areas. Parking area and trailhead signs could not exceed 16 feet while all other signs must not exceed 4 feet.
