Commercial Alert Praises Harkin Bill on Marketing to Children, Obesity
Statement of Commercial Alert Executive Director Gary Ruskin:
It is a national scandal that adults have greater legal protections from unfair advertising than children, who are far more vulnerable and impressionable.
Senator Tom Harkin’s HeLP (Healthier Lifestyles and Prevention) America Act would restore the authority of the Federal Trade Commission to enact rules to protect children from advertisers that promote foods or beverages that are detrimental to their health.
The HeLP America Act would help stop the epidemic of marketing-related diseases afflicting our children, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.
We applaud Senator Harkin for his advocacy on behalf of America’s children, and hope that his bill swiftly becomes law.
