Commercial Alert Applauds Pediatricians’ Statement on Advertising to Children
Following is the statement of Gary Ruskin, executive director of Commercial Alert, regarding the American Academy of Pediatrics’ new policy statement on “Children, Adolescents, and Advertising.”
“Today is a good day for our children. We hope and expect that pediatricians will speed the demise of Channel One, Bus Radio, Neopets and the product placement industry.”
“American children are suffering from an epidemic of marketing-related diseases, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, alcoholism and smoking-related illnesses. This statement is a good step towards ending the plague which corporations have loosed upon our children.”
Commercial Alert is a nonprofit public health and consumer group. Our mission is “to keep the commercial culture within its proper sphere, and to prevent it from exploiting children and subverting the higher values of family, community, environmental integrity and democracy.” For more information, see http://www.commercialalert.org.
